At least 14 rooftop bars in San Francisco have extended their summer hours or added new seating since March, according to city permit records filed with the Department of Building Inspection.
The timing aligns with typical July weather patterns that bring clearer skies after 6 p.m. most evenings, allowing residents to plan outings without the heavier fog that often blankets the western neighborhoods earlier in the day. City data from the previous summer showed rooftop venues accounted for 22 percent of outdoor dining permits issued in the first half of the year, a share that has grown as more buildings on taller structures complete renovations.
Residents in the Mission can start at El Techo on 16th Street between Mission and Valencia, where the bar serves $17 mezcal cocktails and maintains a no-reservation policy after 8 p.m. on weeknights. A second reliable stop sits in SoMa at Charmaine's inside the Proper Hotel on Mission Street, which opens its pool deck to the public starting at 5 p.m. and charges a $12 entry fee on Fridays that includes one non-alcoholic drink.
Both locations sit within two blocks of Muni Metro stops, cutting travel time for workers leaving offices near the Financial District or along Market Street. El Techo faces east toward the downtown skyline, while Charmaine's offers partial views of the bay from its seventh-floor perch. Additional options appear near the Ferry Building on the Embarcadero, where one venue added 40 new stools last month to handle larger groups arriving by ferry from the East Bay.
Current pricing at these spots averages $16 for a draft beer and $18 for signature cocktails, with happy-hour reductions of $4 per drink running until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays through Thursdays. City records indicate average weekend crowds reach 180 people per venue between 7 and 10 p.m., so residents should check online reservation systems the day before or arrive before 6:30 p.m. to secure seating without waits. Most locations accept walk-ins only after 9 p.m. once initial tables turn over.
Residents planning a first visit should confirm current hours on each bar's website and carry a reusable water bottle, since several spots limit single-use plastic. Checking Muni schedules for the return trip after 10 p.m. avoids longer waits at stops along 16th or Mission Streets.
