North Beach sees steady foot traffic this July with free public spaces and low-cost cafes drawing locals and out-of-town guests alike along Columbus Avenue.

The neighborhood's mix of historic sites and daily routines makes it a practical stop for San Franciscans looking to spend a few hours without high entry fees. City officials note that tourism numbers have climbed since the start of 2026, with many residents choosing nearby spots over distant day trips amid ongoing gas prices near $5.20 a gallon in the Bay Area.

Getting There and Parking

Drivers reach North Beach easiest via the Central Freeway exit onto Van Ness Avenue, then east on Broadway. Street parking along Grant Avenue and Union Street runs $3.50 per hour through city meters, while the North Beach Garage at 735 Vallejo Street charges $4.50 for the first hour and $20 for a full day. Muni riders take the 30 Stockton or Powell-Hyde cable car lines, with single fares at $3 and day passes available for $13 at any station.

City Lights Bookstore at 261 Columbus Avenue stays open daily from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. with no admission charge. The Beat Museum two blocks away on Broadway charges $10 for adults and opens at 11 a.m. most weekdays. Washington Square Park offers free benches and grass for picnics near the Church of Saints Peter and Paul, where morning masses draw neighborhood residents.

Budgeting Your Visit

A basic espresso at Caffe Trieste on Vallejo Street costs $4.25, while a slice of focaccia from Liguria Bakery on Stockton Street runs $6.50. Dinner entrees at family-run spots along Grant Avenue average $18 to $24 before tax and tip. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency reported 1.8 million cable car riders in the first half of 2026, with many stopping in North Beach.

Plan for cash at smaller bakeries and bars, since some still avoid card minimums. Arrive before noon on weekends to secure seating at outdoor tables, and check the city's parking app for real-time meter availability along side streets off Columbus.
