Mission District San Francisco: Food, Murals & Neighbourhood Life
The Mission District is San Francisco's most vibrant and contested neighbourhood — a 24th Street-anchored community of Latino culture, world-class burritos, outdoor murals, craft cocktail bars, and tech-gentrification tension that makes it simultaneously the most authentic and most complex part of the city. The Mission Burrito is a religion here: a massive, foil-wrapped torpedo of rice, beans, meat, salsa, and crema, invented in the neighbourhood's taquerias and perfected at El Farolito (open until 3am) and La Taqueria on 25th Street (James Beard Award winner). Clarion Alley between 17th and 18th is the most concentrated outdoor mural gallery in the city — a regularly updated canvas of political and artistic commentary. Dolores Park on weekends is San Francisco's great outdoor living room — picnics, panoramic views of the downtown skyline, and an entire spectrum of city life sharing the grass. Valencia Street offers the neighbourhood's independent bookshops, boutiques, and restaurants.
