Best Day Trips from San Francisco | Wine Country, Muir Woods & Beyond

San Francisco's position on the Bay and its proximity to California's most celebrated natural and cultural destinations makes it one of America's finest bases for day trips. Wine country, ancient redwood forests, historic missions, bohemian coastal towns, and Silicon Valley's tech campus heartland are all within 90 minutes — making the Bay Area a region that rewards extended exploration beyond the city itself.

Napa Valley and Sonoma are the obvious crown jewels — California's most famous wine regions, both approximately 90 minutes from SF, each with distinct characters. Napa is more formal and destination-restaurant driven (The French Laundry, Meadowood); Sonoma is more relaxed and rustic, with a stronger artisan food producer culture alongside its excellent wineries. Either rewards a full day of cellar-door tastings, lunch at a vineyard restaurant, and a scenic drive back through the wine country landscape.

Muir Woods is the closest old-growth redwood experience — a 30-minute drive to a cathedral forest of 1,000-year-old trees that stops visitors in their tracks with its scale and silence. Carmel-by-the-Sea and Big Sur offer the most dramatic coastal scenery in California. Point Reyes National Seashore delivers wildly beautiful coastal hiking and the famous Point Reyes Station cheese and oyster stops. Our guide covers every option with transport, timing, and what to prioritise.
