San Francisco on a Budget: Explore the Bay City for Less

San Francisco's reputation for expense is well-earned, but there are genuine strategies for experiencing one of America's greatest cities without spending a fortune. The single biggest saving is accommodation: staying in the Tenderloin or SoMa neighbourhoods rather than Union Square or Fisherman's Wharf cuts hotel costs by 30 to 50 percent for equivalent quality, and both areas are walkable to most major attractions. The Muni transit system — buses, metro, and cable cars — covers every corner of the city on a single day pass that costs a fraction of rideshare fares for comparable distances.

Free culture in San Francisco is exceptional. The de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences both offer free admission on the first Tuesday of each month — worth timing a visit around. The San Francisco Museum of Modern Art has a free permanent collection floor every day. The Exploratorium at Pier 15 is free on the first Thursday evening of each month. Golden Gate Park, Crissy Field, the Presidio, and Lands End coastal trail are all free and collectively provide more natural beauty than many national parks. The stunning views from Twin Peaks, Bernal Heights, and Dolores Park all cost nothing and are among the finest in any American city.

Budget eating revolves around the Mission District, where taquerias serve enormous burritos for under ten dollars and the neighbourhood's mix of cultures produces some of the most diverse and affordable street food in the country. The Civic Center farmers market on Wednesdays and Sundays brings together vendors from across the Bay Area. Happy hour at bars in the Tenderloin and Hayes Valley typically runs from 4 to 7pm with craft beers and cocktails at half price. For the best value meal with the most memorable setting, pack provisions from a Mission grocery and picnic on the hill at Dolores Park looking out over the downtown skyline.
