Alcatraz San Francisco: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go
Alcatraz Island — "The Rock" — sits 1.5 miles offshore in San Francisco Bay, a former maximum-security federal penitentiary that housed America's most dangerous criminals from 1934 to 1963, including Al Capone, Robert Stroud (the "Birdman"), and Machine Gun Kelly. The island is now a National Park and one of the most visited attractions in the United States — yet manages to be genuinely atmospheric, particularly after the day-trippers leave on the evening boat. The award-winning audio tour, narrated by former prisoners and guards, is included in the ferry ticket and transforms the cell house from a tourist attraction into a human story of punishment, escape attempts, and institutional life. Night tours run Thursday–Saturday and add a genuinely eerie quality to the cell blocks. Book ferry tickets at least 2–3 weeks in advance in summer — the island sells out daily. The boat ride itself, with its views of the city and bridge, is half the experience.
