Crissy Field drew 180 dog owners for an informal 7 a.m. run on July 8 along the shoreline path that parallels Mason Street.
The pattern reflects a shift in how residents use public space after gym memberships climbed past $180 a month at many Marina District studios. People now meet at parks that allow dogs off leash during set hours, turning walks into structured sessions that mix jogging intervals with fetch games.
The Presidio Trust maintains the Crissy Field site with marked 1.2-mile loops and water stations. McLaren Park in the Excelsior district added a fenced 3-acre dog play zone in 2024 that connects directly to a 2-mile fitness trail used by cycling and running groups.
At Crissy Field, the San Francisco Dog Owners Group posts weekly Wednesday hill repeats that start at the Warming Hut parking lot and finish with group stretches. McLaren Park hosts a Saturday 9 a.m. circuit led by volunteer trainers who alternate between sprints on the grass and agility drills with dogs. Both locations require current dog licenses displayed on collars and ban retractable leashes inside the off-leash hours of 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. to 8 p.m.
City records show 312,000 visits to dog-permitted zones during the first six months of 2026, a 22 percent rise from the same period in 2024. Monthly off-leash permits cost $12 through the Recreation and Parks online portal, with annual passes at $96.
Residents can download the SF Rec and Parks app to confirm daily hours and join the next scheduled session at either site. First-time visitors should bring waste bags and arrive before 7 a.m. to secure parking along nearby streets such as Lincoln Boulevard or Geneva Avenue.
