More than 40 people unrolled mats at Crissy Field on July 10 as the first light hit the Golden Gate Bridge at 5:52 a.m.

The surge in early park use tracks with longer daylight hours and steady demand for low-cost outdoor wellness options after UCSF researchers reported in a 2025 study that 68 percent of local adults now track daily movement through apps. Morning sessions fill gaps left by studio closures in the Richmond District last year.

Crissy Field in the Presidio and the trails around Stow Lake in Golden Gate Park have become the two main draws. At Crissy Field, participants park along Mason Street and walk to the beach edge for 45-minute flows led by certified instructors who start at 5:45 a.m. on weekdays. Stow Lake offers a different setting, with loops around the island that begin at the boathouse entrance off John F. Kennedy Drive.

Crissy Field and Stow Lake routines

Both sites sit within city limits and require no advance reservation for small groups. The Presidio Trust recorded 2,800 dawn visitors in June 2026, up from 2,100 the same month in 2024. Golden Gate Park rangers noted similar growth on the east side of Stow Lake, where the water reflects the rising sun for the first 20 minutes after civil twilight.

Instructors at both locations keep sessions under $20, with drop-in rates posted at $12 for non-members. The Bay Trail extension that runs past Crissy Field gives cyclists an easy connection from the Marina Green, while runners from the Panhandle often finish at Stow Lake before heading back along Fulton Street.

Practical steps for first-timers

Arrive 15 minutes early to claim level ground on the sand at Crissy Field or the paved path near the Stow Lake boathouse. Bring a mat with a wind flap and check the tide app the night before, since high water can cover the lower beach section at Crissy Field. UCSF Medical Center at Mount Zion offers free posture clinics on the third Thursday of each month that many regular participants attend to refine their form.

Those who want to extend the morning can continue along the Bay Trail toward Fort Point or loop the full 1.8-mile path around Stow Lake before the crowds arrive at 7 a.m. Local apps list exact sunrise times and parking availability at both spots each day.
