San Francisco parents looking to keep the kids entertained this summer have a wealth of options-many of them budget-friendly-as the city's cultural institutions roll out new programming and extended hours through Labor Day.

The timing matters. With wildfires raging in southern Spain, a massive typhoon bearing down on East Asia, and global economic uncertainty weighing on household budgets, local families are increasingly favoring staycations over international travel. The U.S. Travel Association reported last month that domestic family travel bookings are up 12% year-over-year for July and August, with San Francisco emerging as a top-five destination for multigenerational trips.

New and renewed attractions for all ages

The biggest news is the full reopening of the Children's Creativity Museum at 221 Fourth St. in SoMa. After a two-year, $4.2 million renovation, the museum debuted a new 2,500-square-foot interactive animation studio on June 15. Kids can create stop-motion films using clay and LEGO sets, then screen them in the on-site mini-theater. Admission is $18 for adults and $14 for children ages 2-17; members get in free. The museum is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Over in Golden Gate Park, the California Academy of Sciences at 55 Music Concourse Drive has extended its popular Penguin + Sharks sleepover program through August 31. Families arrive at 5:30 p.m., enjoy a pizza dinner in the African Hall, then camp overnight under the four-story Osher Rainforest dome. Tickets run $120 per person and include breakfast the next morning. That price covers admission for the following day as well, making it a decent value when you factor in regular entry at $39.95 for adults and $29.95 for kids.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department resumes its free outdoor movie series on July 17 at Dolores Park. This year's lineup includes Encanto (July 17), The Mitchells vs. the Machines (Aug. 7), and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (Aug. 28). All screenings begin at sunset, roughly 8:30 p.m. The department expects around 8,000 attendees per showing, based on last year's turnout.

Budget-stretching options and practical tips

Cost remains a top concern for families. A 2025 survey by the San Francisco Travel Association found that 62% of local parents cited price as the primary factor when choosing summer activities. Fortunately, the Museums for All program offers reduced admission of $3 per person for families with a valid EBT or Medi-Cal card. Participating venues include the Exploratorium at Pier 15, the de Young Museum in Golden Gate Park, and the San Francisco Zoo on Sloat Boulevard.

The zoo, in particular, has a new attraction worth seeing. Its Koret Children's Play Garden, which opened June 1, features a 40-foot climbing net, a splash pad with 27 spray nozzles, and a caterpillar-shaped tunnel. General admission is $25 for adults and $19 for kids 3-12, but the Museums for All discount applies. The zoo also offers free admission on the first Wednesday of each month, courtesy of the city's Free First Wednesdays program.

For families seeking a low-cost day trip, the San Francisco Public Library's Summer Stride program runs through August 8. Kids who read 10 books or more earn a free ticket to the Children's Creativity Museum, a pair of Giants tickets, or a BART fare card worth $20. More than 14,000 children participated last year, according to library spokesperson Jaime Wong.

Finally, a practical note: Muni's F-Market & Wharves historic streetcar line runs from the Castro to Fisherman's Wharf and costs just $2.50 for adults, while kids under 5 ride free. The line stops within three blocks of the Exploratorium, the Ferry Building marketplace, and the Aquarium of the Bay. For families starting their day in SoMa or downtown, it's the cheapest route to a full day of adventure.
