San Francisco Recreation and Parks recorded 1.8 million facility visits in the first half of 2026, a 28 percent increase from the same period in 2025, with the largest gains at sites offering pickleball courts and group running programs.

The jump comes as the city completes upgrades funded under the 2024 Parks Bond measure, which allocated $68 million for court resurfacing and lighting at 14 locations. Residents now choose structured sessions at public venues over private gyms at higher rates than in prior years, according to the department’s June usage summary.

Neighborhood sites driving the numbers

At the Mission Recreation Center on 19th Street, monthly court reservations rose from 1,400 in January 2025 to 2,100 this June, mostly for pickleball leagues that run weekday evenings. Further north, the Marina Green path between Marina Boulevard and the St. Francis Yacht Club saw organized run groups increase from 12 weekly sessions last summer to 19 this year, with average attendance per session reaching 48 participants. Both sites fall under the same department permit system that caps group sizes at 60 to protect turf and pathways.

Department staff attribute part of the growth to lower entry costs. A six-week pickleball clinic at Mission Recreation Center costs $45 for residents, compared with $120 for equivalent private-club sessions in the same neighborhood. The Embarcadero Promenade between Pier 5 and Pier 15 added temporary lighting last month, allowing evening sessions that were previously unavailable.

What the data signals for coming months

Registration for the department’s fall programs opens July 15 at 9 a.m. online. Slots at the two sites mentioned above typically fill within four hours. Residents seeking lower-cost entry can also check the free drop-in schedule posted each Monday at the Presidio YMCA on Lombard Street, which shares some programming with city rec centers. Updated maps of lighted courts and trail meetup points are available on the Recreation and Parks website.
