San Francisco Mayor's 2026-27 Budget Update Sets Timeline for Expanded Street Services

The changes affect all eleven supervisorial districts, with initial crews assigned to high-traffic commercial corridors first.
City budget documents show the allocations respond to revenue projections prepared by the controller's office in May. Those projections incorporated updated sales tax and hotel tax figures that fell short of earlier estimates. The schedule therefore spreads new expenditures across three phases rather than a single start date.
Phased rollout details
Phase one begins October 1 with 22 new street cleaning teams added to existing routes in the Tenderloin, Mission, and South of Market. Phase two starts January 2027 and adds 15 more teams in the Richmond and Sunset districts. Phase three, scheduled for April 2027, covers remaining neighborhoods and includes new equipment purchases listed in the budget line items.
Residents will notice the changes through altered collection schedules posted on the Department of Public Works website and through direct observation of crews on weekday mornings. Property owners in commercial areas will also receive updated notices on sidewalk maintenance responsibilities that align with the new crew coverage.
The adopted budget totals $14.9 billion for the fiscal year beginning July 1, according to the final document approved by the Board of Supervisors in June. Of that amount, $85 million is earmarked specifically for the street services expansion over 18 months.
City departments will publish quarterly progress reports beginning in December 2026. Those reports will list actual crew deployment numbers and response times for service requests submitted through the 311 system. Residents can track the data on the city's open data portal without needing to file additional public records requests.
